Mark Rothko, Kees van Dongen, Chaïm Soutine, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse – maestros who honed the art of the paintbrush – became the compass to Orlov’s search for true color. His paintings are free from the burden of symbolism and conceptualism, where the purity of form is birthed by the organic complexity of finely defined relationships between colors on the range of the canvas. The cooling cobalt, ultramarine, and turquoise don’t extinguish the fiery cadmium, carmine, and magenta, but rather quench an esthetical thirst for contrast.
